Lomotil and Pregnancy: Risks & Safety Concerns
Lomotil (diphenoxylate) is a medication used to treat diarrhea. It is not considered safe for pregnant women to take according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA has classified Lomotil as a pregnancy category C drug, which means that animal studies have shown adverse effects on the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women.
According to the American Pregnancy Association, Lomotil should not be used during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester, as it may increase the risk of congenital disabilities. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, talk to your doctor about other, safer options for managing diarrhea.
