Frequent Urination in Early Pregnancy: Causes & Relief Tips
Frequent urination during pregnancy is common, especially in the early stages. It is caused by the increased production of the hormone progesterone and increased blood flow to the kidneys, which leads to increased urine production. Here are some tips to help manage frequent urination:
1. Drink plenty of fluids: Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day, but especially limit intake in the hours leading up to bedtime to reduce the need to get up during the night.
2. Empty your bladder regularly: Pee even when you don’t feel a strong urge and do not wait until your bladder is full to avoid putting pressure on your bladder.
3. Do pelvic floor exercises (Kegel exercises): Strengthening your pelvic floor muscles can help control bladder leaks.
4. Lean forward while urinating: Doing so can help ensure you empty your bladder fully.
5. Avoid bladder irritants: Certain foods and drinks like caffeine, alcohol, artificial sweeteners, and spicy foods can irritate the bladder and worsen your need to urinate. Limit or avoid these items.
6. Elevate your feet: Elevating your feet at night or when sitting down may help reduce pressure on your bladder.
7. Talk to your doctor: If your symptoms persist or become severe, talk to your doctor. There may be an underlying medical condition that needs treatment.
