Cervical Changes During Pregnancy: What to Expect
The cervix is the lower, narrow end of the uterus that opens into the vagina. It changes position and texture throughout the menstrual cycle and during pregnancy.
During pregnancy, the cervix:
* Softens and becomes more elastic. This allows it to stretch during childbirth.
* Moves lower in the vagina. This is because the uterus grows and pushes the cervix down.
* Opens slightly to allow the passage of sperm and, eventually, the baby.
Some women may experience cervical tenderness during pregnancy. This is usually mild and goes away on its own. However, if you are experiencing severe cervical pain, it is important to see a doctor to rule out any underlying problems.
It is not possible to see the cervix without a medical instrument, such as a speculum. If you are concerned about your cervix, you should talk to your doctor.
