Medical Abortion After 2 Months: Effectiveness & Options
Medical abortions, also called medication abortions or the abortion pill, are only effective up to 10 weeks of pregnancy (70 days after the first day of the last menstrual period). After this time, surgical abortion is generally the only option. There are two medications used for medical abortion: mifeprex (also called Mifeprex or RU-486) and misoprostol (also called Cytotec or Arthrotec). Mifeprex is taken first and blocks the action of the hormone progesterone, which the body needs to continue a pregnancy. Misoprostol is taken 24 to 48 hours later and causes the uterus to contract and empty.
It's important to consult a healthcare professional if you are considering a medical abortion to discuss your options, confirm your pregnancy timing, and safely manage your decision. Self-medicating or attempting an abortion without medical supervision can have serious health consequences.
