Round Ligament Pain

The most common cause of belly pain in early pregnancy is round ligament pain. Round ligaments are thick, cord-like structures that run from the front of the uterus to the groin area. As the uterus grows, it puts tension on the round ligaments, which can cause sharp, stabbing pain or a dull ache in the lower abdomen or groin.

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

A UTI is a bacterial infection that can occur anywhere in the urinary tract, including the kidneys, bladder, and urethra. UTIs are common in pregnancy due to the changes in hormone levels and the increased pressure on the bladder from the growing uterus. Symptoms of a UTI include frequent urination, pain or burning during urination, cloudy or foul-smelling urine, and lower abdominal pain.

Ectopic Pregnancy

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, most commonly in the fallopian tubes. Ectopic pregnancies can be life-threatening and require prompt medical treatment. Symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy include abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding, and dizziness or fainting.

Miscarriage

A miscarriage is the loss of a pregnancy before 20 weeks of gestation. Miscarriages are common, occurring in about 15-20% of all pregnancies. Symptoms of a miscarriage include vaginal bleeding, abdominal pain, and cramps.

Abdominal Muscle Separation

Abdominal muscle separation, also known as diastasis recti, occurs when the muscles of the abdominal wall separate during pregnancy. This can cause a bulge in the abdomen and pain in the lower back or abdomen.
