Ultrasound After Miscarriage: What to Expect & What It Reveals
An ultrasound after a miscarriage is performed to evaluate the uterus and determine whether any products of conception (POC) remain. It can also help identify potential causes of the miscarriage, such as uterine abnormalities or fibroids.
Here are some of the things that the ultrasound may show:
* Retained products of conception (RPOC): These are pieces of the pregnancy tissue that remain in the uterus after the miscarriage. RPOC can be seen as dark areas on the ultrasound.
* Uterine lining: The thickness and appearance of the uterine lining can provide information about the hormonal changes that have occurred during the miscarriage.
* Uterine abnormalities: An ultrasound can identify any abnormalities in the shape or size of the uterus that may have contributed to the miscarriage.
* Fibroids: Fibroids are non-cancerous growths in the uterus. They can interfere with implantation of a fertilized egg or cause a miscarriage.
* Ectopic pregnancy: In some cases, an ultrasound may reveal an ectopic pregnancy, which occurs when a fertilized egg implants outside of the uterus.
The ultrasound findings will be reviewed by your doctor, who will discuss the results with you and develop a plan for your care.
