How to Make Vermilion Sealing Wax
Sealing wax provides a decorative way to embellish or seal notes and envelopes for crafting, stationary or ceremonial purposes. It also serves as a way to deter tampering, as it is almost impossible to open a seal without breaking the wax. Making vermilion-colored sealing wax, a commonly used shade of red, doesn't take very long and only requires a few basic materials.Things You'll Need
- 1 cup carnauba wax
- 1 tbsp palm kernel oil
- 1 tbsp cinnabar candle pigment
- Glass mixing bowl
- 10-inch taper mold
Instructions
Add the carnauba wax and palm kernel oil to the glass mixing bowl. Palm kernel oil is solid at room temperature and red.
Microwave the bowl of wax and oil for three minutes, or until the contents melt together into a thin red, translucent liquid.
Stir in the cinnabar colored candle pigment. Cinnabar pigment is the same color as the mineral cinnabar, from which the natural vermilion color derives.
Pour the melted, reddish orange mixture into the taper candle mold. Allow it to sit in the mold for five hours to cool to room temperature and harden before use.
