Development of a Fetus at 22 Weeks
At the 22 week/four-month mark in the development of a fetus, important changes begin to take shape. These changes are not only to the growing fetus but to the mother and the relationship between them.-
Changes to the Fetus
-
At this point in development, the fetus weighs approximately 450 grams (close to a pound). The fetus is usually around 11 inches long. The fetus is developing taste buds at this stage. The eyelids, eyebrows and fingernails are present. The first indicator of teeth show up beneath the fetus' gum line as tooth buds.
Changes to the Mother
-
The mother's weekly weight increase is approximately 10 to 14 ounces in week 22. The top of the mother's uterus is about one inch above her bellybutton. A slight increase in vaginal discharge may begin.
Changes in the Relationship
-
By week 22, the fetus has begun a regular sleeping and waking cycle and the mother is able to disrupt this with her movements. The fetus is also able to hear most conversation outside, including conversation and music.
