Understanding Fetal Growth Restriction: Causes and Risks
Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) occurs when a fetus does not grow quickly enough while in the womb. A fetus who weighs less than the 10th percentile for its gestational age has IUGR. Many factors can cause IUGR, which increases the risk for intrauterine death.-
Malnutrition
-
Fetuses with IUGR may be receiving inadequate nutrition for several reasons, such as high altitudes, problems with the placenta, preeclampsia or eclampsia, or multiple pregnancies.
Infection
-
Women who become infected with toxoplasmosis, rubella, syphilis or cytomegalovirus while pregnant are more likely to have babies with IUGR.
Risk Factors
-
Women who abuse alcohol, smoke, are addicted to drugs, have high blood pressure or get poor nutrition are at a higher risk of having babies with IUGR.
Warning
-
If you are pregnant and your baby seems to be moving less than normal, contact your doctor.
