Understanding the Four Levels of Preventive Healthcare
Primary Prevention:
- Aims to prevent the occurrence of disease or disability before symptoms or signs appear in individuals who have no evidence of disease. Preventive health measures like health education, vaccinations, and prenatal care fall under this level.
Secondary Prevention:
- Focuses on early detection and prompt treatment of disease or injury in individuals with early signs or symptoms. Screening tests, regular checkups, and early diagnosis are examples of secondary prevention.
Tertiary Prevention:
- Aims to limit disability or progression of an existing disease, manage symptoms, and improve the quality of life in individuals with chronic or advanced diseases. This level involves rehabilitation therapies, pain management, and lifestyle interventions.
Quaternary Prevention:
- Seeks to prevent over-medicalization and overuse or mismanagement of medical interventions. This level aims to strike a balance between the benefits and potential harms of medical care, considering an individual's values and preferences.
