Safe & Effective Ways to Remove Earwax from Children
Although ear wax is a natural product of the body, having too much ear wax can cause hearing problems or discomfort in children. If you're looking to try to get rid of ear wax in a child, follow these steps.Things You'll Need
- Hydrogen peroxide
- Mineral oil
- Water bottle
- Over-the-counter ear wax product
Instructions
Use hydrogen peroxide. Using a dropper add a small amount of hydrogen peroxide to your child's ear. Allow it to bubble, then turn your child's ear to drain. This can help dislodge ear wax.
Use the natural approach. A few drops of olive or mineral oil in your child's ear can soften the ear wax. Softened wax will often come out on its own.
Rest your child's ear on a warm water bottle or on a warm cloth. Heat can help melt ear wax so it can drain. Be sure that the temperature of the surface is warm and not hot.
Purchase an over-the-counter ear wax removal solution or kit.
Contact your child's pediatrician. He may have a preferred method of loosening and removing ear wax. The doctor may soften and scrape away the ear wax from your child's ear.
Go for prevention. Keep your child's ears clean by using a soft washcloth on the outer ear. You'll also want to be sure to keep your child hydrated. Dehydration can make ear wax harder.
