Is trichomoniasis dangerous to a unborn baby?
Trichomoniasis is a common sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis. It can cause symptoms such as vaginal itching and irritation, burning sensation during urination, and a strawberry cervix. In most cases, trichomoniasis does not cause any serious health problems, but it can be dangerous for an unborn baby.
If a pregnant woman has trichomoniasis, she may be at risk of premature birth, low birth weight, and other pregnancy complications. In addition, trichomoniasis can increase the risk of acquiring other sexually transmitted infections, such as HIV.
It is important for pregnant women to be tested for trichomoniasis and to receive treatment if they are infected. Treatment for trichomoniasis is typically a course of antibiotics.
