Introducing Solids: Safely Mixing Infant Cereal with Juice
Before the age of six months, all babies need for nutrients is breast milk or formula. An infant's first solid food is usually a single grain rice or oat cereal mixed with breast milk, formula, or water into a super fine mush so it is easy for baby to swallow and digest. Sometimes, however, introducing solids can lead to constipation, since baby's digestive tract is used to a liquid-only diet. According to Family Education, 100 percent fruit juice can be mixed with cereals for infants 4 to 6 months old. This may help to ease baby's constipation.Things You'll Need
- Infant cereal
- Prune, apple or pear juice
Instructions
Measure out a serving of infant cereal into a small bowl. Babies who are just beginning solids will probably only eat a few tablespoons of cereal.
Add by tablespoons prune, apple or pear juice until the cereal is of a watery consistency. Stir cereal well. Juice is better added at room temperature or slightly warmer.
Feed cereal to your baby with a soft-tipped baby spoon.
