Insufficient iron absorption is also linked to the phytates found in whole grains, nuts and legumes. Excessive consumption of antacids interferes with the body's ability to metabolize iron.

Taking iron pills on an empty stomach will ensure optimal absorption, and consuming foods containing vitamin C may further increase absorption.

Inadequate levels of iron can lead to anemia, which requires treatment. Symptoms include fatigue, pale skin, unusual cravings, poor appetite, cold hands or feet, headaches and dizziness.
