Electrolyte Water: DIY Recipes & Benefits for Hydration
Electrolytes are molecules from minerals like potassium and chromium that have an electrical charge. Our bodies depend on electrolytes for proper functioning; without electrolytes, our nervous system would shut down. Electrolytes help control heart rate, fluid balances and most other bodily functions. Commercial sports drinks provide electrolytes, but they are expensive and often contain large amounts of sugar or high fructose corn syrup. Homemade electrolyte water is surprisingly easy and cheap to make. Although you can use exotic salts (like Himalayan table salt) and natural flavorings in your homemade electrolyte water, Dr. Oz from The Dr. Oz show recommends keeping the recipe simple.Things You'll Need
- 1 liter of water
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- 2 tablespoons agave nectar
- ½ tablespoon sea salt
Instructions
Fill a 1 liter bottle with water (or use pre-purchased bottled water).
Measure the ingredients using measuring spoons. Be careful to measure correctly--the Mayo Clinic warns that it's vital to get the correct ingredient amounts to ensure effectiveness and safety.
Put the cap on the bottle, and shake until blended.
