Whole Grain Rice: Health Benefits, Nutritional Value & Storage
Whole grain rice is a healthier alternative to ordinary white rice. The majority of rice used today is milled, but brown rice is the unmilled kernel with only its outer shell (husk) removed. Moreover, it's 100 percent whole grain.-
Unmilled Benefits
-
Unmilled whole grain rice retains its natural oils, essential fatty acids, fiber and phytonutrients such as antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.
Shelf Life
-
Whole grain rice is more perishable than enriched white rice. It is great for daily use, but because of the nutritious, oil-rich germ and bran and other natural oils in the bran layer, it's more perishable.
Storage
-
Usually, whole grain rice will stay fresh in a cool food cupboard for about six months. Try refrigerating or freezing for longer storage.
Digestion
-
Whole grain rice digests easier than white rice due to the remains of the fiber-rich bran.
Carbohydrates
-
It's a complex carbohydrate that offers more nutrients, minerals and fiber than simple carbohydrates.
