Wisdom Tooth Recovery: Smoking and Dry Socket Risk - What You Need to Know
It's generally recommended that you wait at least 24 hours after having your wisdom tooth removed before smoking. Dry socket is a painful condition that can occur when the blood clot that forms in the empty tooth socket is dislodged. This can happen due to suction from smoking, so it's important to avoid smoking for as long as possible to reduce your risk of developing dry socket.
Here are some additional tips to help you avoid dry socket:
- Avoid using straws.
- Avoid vigorous rinsing or spitting.
- Eat soft foods.
- Avoid hot foods and drinks.
- Take pain medication as directed by your doctor.
- Follow all of your doctor's instructions.
If you experience any pain, swelling, or bleeding after having your wisdom tooth removed, contact your doctor immediately. These could be signs of dry socket or another complication.
