Dry Socket After Wisdom Teeth: Recognizing and Treating Infection
Dry socket is a painful condition that can occur after a tooth extraction. It occurs when the blood clot that forms in the tooth socket dissolves or is dislodged, exposing the underlying bone and nerves. Infection can develop if bacteria enter the exposed socket. It will result in the following additional symptoms on top of what is experienced typically for dry socket :
- Throbbing pain that worsens over time
- Swelling of the gums and face
- Fever
- Pus drainage from the socket
- Bad breath
- Difficulty opening the mouth
If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to see your dentist or oral surgeon right away. They will be able to diagnose the infection and prescribe antibiotics to treat it.
