Prerequisites for Becoming an Orthodontist: Required Courses
To become an orthodontist, you will need to complete the following classes:
* High School:
* Math: Algebra II, Trigonometry, Calculus
* Science: Biology, Chemistry, Physics
* English: English Composition, Literature
* Social Studies: History, Government, Economics
* Foreign Language: Spanish, French, German, etc.
* College (Bachelor of Science degree):
* Math: Calculus I and II, Linear Algebra, Probability and Statistics
* Science: General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics, Biology
* English: English Composition, Literature
* Social Studies: History, Government, Economics
* Dental School (Doctor of Dental Medicine degree):
* Basic Sciences: Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology
* Dental Sciences: Operative Dentistry, Prosthodontics, Periodontics, Endodontics, Oral Surgery, Pediatric Dentistry, Preventive Dentistry
* Orthodontic Residency:
* Orthodontics: Diagnosis and Treatment of Malocclusion, Advanced Orthodontic Techniques, Research, Case Presentation
In addition to these classes, you will also need to complete clinical rotations in various dental specialties, including orthodontics. You will also need to pass the National Board of Dental Examinations Part I and Part II, and the American Board of Orthodontics examination.
