Canker Sores: Causes, Symptoms & Treatment
The sores on your gums that are white and sore are likely canker sores. Canker sores are small, round ulcers that can develop on the inside of the lips, cheeks, gums, or tongue. They are typically white or gray in color and have a red border. Canker sores can be very painful and make it difficult to eat, drink, and talk.
There are several different things that can cause canker sores, including:
* Viral infections, such as the herpes simplex virus or the coxsackievirus
* Bacterial infections, such as streptococcus or staphylococcus
* Injuries to the mouth, such as biting the inside of your cheek or brushing your teeth too hard
* Food allergies or sensitivities
* Stress
* Hormonal changes, such as those that occur during pregnancy or menstruation
Most canker sores will heal on their own within a few weeks. However, there are some treatments that can help relieve the pain and discomfort, such as:
* Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen
* Anesthetic gels or sprays that can be applied directly to the canker sore
* Salt water rinses
* Avoiding foods that trigger your canker sores
If your canker sores are very severe or do not heal within a few weeks, you should see your doctor. They may prescribe a medication to help treat the canker sores or recommend other treatments.
