Cement Exposure & Milk Consumption: Health Risks and Precautions
Do not give milk before or after exposure to cement
Milk does more than "neutralize" the hydrochloric acid in cement.
The problem with milk is that a reaction take place between the calcium salt of the acid with the albumin of milk or blood to form an insoluble compound. Such compounds are deposited in tissues resulting in a condition known as "cement dermatitis."
Here are some precautions you can take:
- Provide workers with protective clothing and equipment, including gloves, goggles, and respirators.
- Encourage workers to wash their hands and face thoroughly after working with cement.
- Provide workers with access to clean drinking water.
- Train workers about the hazards of cement and how to protect themselves.
