Safely Removing Loose Baby Teeth: A Parent's Guide
Most children begin to lose their baby teeth around the age of 6 or 7 according to MayoClinic.com. Usually these teeth will fall out without the need for interference. Alternatively, your child might aid the process by biting into solid foods, such as apples or fiddling with it. However, if despite your child's efforts, the tooth continues to dangle loosely by a thread, it may be time to pull.Things You'll Need
- Soap and water
- Towel
- Chair
- Gauze pad
Instructions
Wash your hands thoroughly using the soap water. Wipe your hands dry with the towel.
Place the child in the chair and ask him to open his mouth wide. Check to make sure you can move the loose tooth back and forth, without causing pain.
Tell the child to remain calm. Make random conversation to get his mind off of the upcoming pulling.
Place a gauze pad between the two fingers you will use to pull the tooth. Grab the tooth through the gauze pad and gently pull until it is removed. Stop pulling, if the tooth does not come out easily.
Grab a new gauze pad and apply pressure to the gums, to stop any bleeding. Instruct the child to lean forward, to avoid swallowing any blood and allow him to hold the gauze in place.
