Postpartum Period Return After Breastfeeding: What to Expect
It is common for breastfeeding women to experience delayed menstruation. The length of time before a period returns varies from woman to woman. Some women experience a return to menstruation as early as six weeks after giving birth, while others may not have a period for up to a year or more.
The release of hormones during breastfeeding, especially prolactin, can inhibit the release of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), which are necessary for ovulation. This delay in ovulation leads to a delay in menstruation.
Exclusive breastfeeding and frequent nursing can further prolong the delay in menstruation. Once a woman introduces solid foods to her baby and decreases the frequency of nursing, her menstrual cycle may start to resume.
It is important to remember that the return to menstruation can be highly individualized, and there is no set timeframe. If you have any concerns about your period or breastfeeding, consult your healthcare provider.
