Implantation Bleeding vs. Period Bleeding: Key Differences & What to Expect
Implantation bleeding and menstrual bleeding (period bleeding) can look similar, making them easy to confuse. However, there are subtle differences between the two.
Implantation bleeding:
- Occurs about 10-14 days after ovulation, around the time when the fertilized egg implants in the uterine wall.
- Typically light and lasts for a few hours or days.
- Color ranges from pink to light brown or even red.
- May be accompanied by mild cramps or lower backache.
- Does not contain tissue or clots, unlike menstrual bleeding.
Menstrual bleeding:
- Occurs about every 28 days, although the cycle length can vary.
- Typically lasts for 3-7 days.
- Color is usually bright or dark red.
- May be accompanied by cramps, bloating, mood changes, and fatigue.
- Contains endometrial tissue and may include small clots.
If you are not sure whether you are experiencing implantation bleeding or menstrual bleeding, it is best to take a pregnancy test or consult a doctor to determine the cause of the bleeding.
