How to Make an Ice Grip for Crutches
If you're going to use crutches on ice, even for only a brief period of time, it is essential that you outfit them with ice grips to prevent additional injury; "Science Daily" reports that in the U.S. there are over 3,500 mobility-aid related injuries annually among children alone. Make walking on ice in crutches safer with homemade ice grips fashioned with common household tools.Things You'll Need
- Extra pair of rubber floor grip caps
- Compass
- Jigsaw
- 1/4-inch plywood
- Stainless steel screws
- Screw driver
Instructions
Measure the inside diameter of the extra pair of rubber floor grip caps. With this measurement, use a compass to draw two circular discs on a 1/4-inch piece of plywood.
Cut out the discs from the 1/4-inch plywood using a jigsaw. Insert one disc into each rubber floor grip cap.
Screw 3 to 4 stainless steel screws through the plywood inside each cap. Space the pointy screw tip equally apart in a circular pattern with at least 1/4 inch out the bottom of the cap protruding.
Remove the regular rubber floor grip caps and replace with the ice grip caps before going outdoors. Remember to slide the regular caps back on for indoor use.
