Why is there no cure for the zika virus?
There is currently no cure or specific treatment for Zika virus infection. Treatment is focused on relieving the symptoms of the infection, such as fever, joint pain, and headache. Rest, fluids, and over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, can help alleviate these symptoms. In severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary to provide supportive care. Additionally, there are no FDA-approved vaccines available to prevent the virus and currently all methods rely on prevention of mosquito bites.
Efforts are ongoing to develop treatments and vaccines for Zika virus infection. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) are supporting research projects aimed at understanding the virus and developing countermeasures against it. The ultimate goal is to develop safe and effective therapies that can help prevent or treat Zika virus infection and protect people from its associated health consequences.
