Ebola Virus Subtypes: A Comprehensive Overview
The Ebola virus has five known subtypes:
* Zaire ebolavirus is the most deadly subtype, with a fatality rate of up to 90%. It was first identified in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (then Zaire) in 1976.
* Sudan ebolavirus is also highly deadly, with a fatality rate of up to 50%. It was first identified in Sudan in 1976.
* Taï Forest ebolavirus is less deadly, with a fatality rate of up to 10%. It was first identified in Côte d'Ivoire in 1994.
* Bundibugyo ebolavirus is also less deadly, with a fatality rate of up to 25%. It was first identified in Uganda in 2007.
* Reston ebolavirus is the only known ebolavirus that is not pathogenic to humans. It was first identified in the Philippines in 1989.
