Malaria: Understanding the Cause – Virus, Bacteria, or Protist?
Malaria is caused by a protist of the genus Plasmodium. There are six species of Plasmodium that cause malaria in humans: Plasmodium falciparum, P. vivax, P. ovale, P. malariae, P. knowlesi, and P. cynomolgi.
