Ebola Virus Outbreaks: A Historical Overview (1976-Present)
The first Ebola virus outbreak occurred in 1976 in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire). The outbreak occurred in a village near the Ebola River, which gave the virus its name. The second outbreak occurred in what is now South Sudan, also in 1976.
