Understanding Bedsores: Stages, Symptoms & What to Look For
Bedsores, also called pressure sores, appear on the skin. Bedsores may be the result of prolonged sitting or laying down without being repositioned. They usually form in four stages.-
Stage 1
-
Bedsores start as an area of irritation appearing either red or a deep purple hue.
Stage 2
-
Bedsores next appear as an open sore. Redness and a purple discoloration are present. Your bedsore may have the look of a skin abrasion or blister.
Stage 3
-
A deep crater-like wound is formed. This indicates the damage done to your outer and inner skin layer.
Stage 4
-
Massive skin loss has occurred around the bedsore. This causes damage to joints and tendons below your skin's surface.
Treatment
-
As long as you don't ignore a bedsore, it can easily be treated. If you notice open sores or other irritations of the skin, consult your doctor immediately.
