The maternal side of the placenta is smooth and shiny. It is also called the basal plate. The maternal side of the placenta is in contact with the uterine wall and is where the blood vessels of the mother and the fetus exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide. The fetal side of the placenta is not as smooth and shiny and contains the umbilical cord.
