How to Cleanse a Scar
A scar is a visible closure of the skin after a wounding. Scars can occur from acne, accidents or after surgeries on the incision site. Scar formation can take up to 18 months. Proper cleansing and care of the scar can help minimize the redness or raised texture of the scar's final appearance. It is important to keep the scar dry, and not pick at it as it heals.Things You'll Need
- Cold water
- Antibiotic soap
- Clean washcloth
- Antibiotic ointment
- Bandage
Instructions
Wash the scar by running cold water over it. This keeps any irritants or dirt from entering the scar while it is still healing.
Cleanse the area around the scar with a damp washcloth and antibacterial soap.
Consult your doctor about whether to apply antibacterial ointment to the scar. Small wounds do not usually require antibacterial ointment, but they can lower the risk of having an unsightly scar once healing is complete. Scars at the later stages of healing may not be affected by the ointment, so ask your doctor before applying it.
Cover the scar with a bandage while it is still in the healing stages. This will prevent your clothes from irritating it and will help the scar stay closed.
