Sengstaken-Blakemore Tube Complications: Managing Sudden Breathing Difficulties
If a patient with a Sengstaken-Blakemore (S-B) tube suddenly experiences difficulty breathing, take the following steps:1. Immediately assess the patient's airway and breathing. Ensure the patency of the airway, provide oxygen if necessary and maintain adequate oxygenation and ventilation.
2. Stop suction and deflate the esophageal balloon.
- Deflate the balloon by slowly withdrawing the syringe attached to the balloon port while supporting the tube to avoid dislodgement.
- Continue to monitor the patient's respiratory status closely during this process.
3. Re-assess the patient's airway and breathing.
- If the patient's breathing improves, leave the tube deflated and monitor closely.
- If the patient's breathing does not improve or worsens, re-inflate the balloon and seek immediate medical assistance.
4. Notify the healthcare provider immediately.
- They will further assess the patient and make appropriate adjustments or interventions as needed.
5. Document the intervention and patient's response in the medical record.
