Pneumonia: Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis & Treatment - Expert Information
Pneumonia is a type of lung infection. It can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. Pneumonia can be mild or severe, and can even be life-threatening.
Symptoms of pneumonia can include:
* Cough
* Chest pain
* Shortness of breath
* Fever
* chills
* Loss of appetite
* fatigue
* Headache
* Muscle aches
* Confusion (in older adults)
Pneumonia is usually diagnosed with a chest X-ray and a physical exam. Blood tests and sputum tests may also be used to diagnose pneumonia and identify the cause of the infection.
Treatment for pneumonia depends on the cause of the infection. Bacterial pneumonia is treated with antibiotics. Viral pneumonia does not respond to antibiotics, and treatment is supportive (such as rest, fluids, and pain relievers).
Pneumonia can be prevented by getting vaccinated against the flu and pneumonia, washing your hands frequently, and avoiding contact with people who are sick.
