What Epilepsy Treatment Doesn’t
What Epilepsy Treatment Doesn’t
* Cure epilepsy. There is no cure for epilepsy, but it can be managed with treatment.
* Prevent seizures. Epilepsy treatments can reduce the frequency and severity of seizures, but they cannot prevent them completely.
* Stop seizures from happening. Epilepsy treatments can help to control seizures, but they cannot stop them from happening altogether.
* Eliminate the need for medication. Some people with epilepsy may be able to reduce or stop taking medication over time, but most people will need to take medication for the rest of their lives.
* Reverse brain damage. Epilepsy can cause brain damage, but treatment cannot reverse this damage.
* Improve cognitive function. Epilepsy can affect cognitive function, but treatment cannot always improve it.
* Prevent sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). SUDEP is a rare but serious complication of epilepsy that can cause death without warning. There is no way to prevent SUDEP, but treatment can reduce the risk of it happening.
