Voluntary Muscles: Understanding Skeletal and Partially Conscious Control
1. Skeletal muscles:
- These muscles are attached to bones and are responsible for voluntary movements such as walking, running, lifting objects, and writing.
2. Some smooth muscles:
- Certain smooth muscles, such as those in the iris of the eye and the piloerector muscles (responsible for goosebumps), can be consciously controlled to some extent.
3. Muscles involved in speech and swallowing:
- The muscles involved in speech production and swallowing, including the muscles of the tongue, lips, and pharynx, are under voluntary control.
4. External anal sphincter:
- The external anal sphincter muscle, which controls the voluntary release of stool, is under conscious control.
In contrast, involuntary muscles, such as those found in the heart, stomach, and intestines, are not under conscious control and function autonomously.
