Heart Muscle Types: Myocardium, Endocardium & Epicardium Explained
The three main muscle types found in your heart are:
1. Myocardium: The myocardium is the thick, muscular layer that makes up most of the heart's structure. It is responsible for the pumping action of the heart and is composed of cardiac muscle fibers.
2. Endocardium: The endocardium is a thin, smooth membrane lining the inside of the heart's chambers. It protects the inner surfaces of the heart from friction and helps ensure the smooth flow of blood.
3. Epicardium: The epicardium is the outermost layer of the heart. It is a serous membrane that covers the entire surface of the heart, protecting it from damage and helping to reduce friction during heart contractions.
