Muscle Pulls on Bone: Understanding Bone Stress and Potential Injuries
When a muscle pulls on a bone, it creates tension in the bone. This tension can cause the bone to bend or break, depending on the amount of force applied. In most cases, the bone will bend slightly and then return to its original shape when the muscle relaxes. However, if the force is too great, the bone may break.
Bones are made up of a hard outer layer called the cortex and a softer inner layer called the medulla. The cortex is made up of dense bone tissue that is strong and resistant to bending. The medulla is made up of a network of trabeculae, which are thin bars of bone that support the cortex.
When a muscle pulls on a bone, the tension is concentrated on the cortex. The cortex is able to withstand this tension because it is so dense. However, if the force is too great, the cortex may break. This can cause the bone to break completely or it may simply create a crack in the bone.
If a bone does break, it will usually heal on its own. However, the healing process can take several weeks or even months. During this time, it is important to protect the bone from further injury. This can be done by wearing a cast or brace.
