Intercalated Discs: Presence and Absence in Smooth Muscle

Intercalated discs are not found in smooth muscle. They are specialised structures found in cardiac muscle and skeletal muscle that facilitate the transmission of electrical impulses and coordinate muscle contractions. Smooth muscle, on the other hand, lacks intercalated discs and instead relies on gap junctions for cell-to-cell communication and coordination of muscle activity.
