Why do I have muscles and work out?
Muscles
Muscles are responsible for movement in the human body. They consist of bundles of elongated cells, called muscle fibres. Muscle fibres may contain many nuclei and have the capacity to contract.
Muscles are attached to bones by tendons, bands of connective tissue. When contracted, muscles create tension in the tendons, pulling the bones and moving the body. They also provide resistance to movement. Without them, the body would be unable to move or maintain posture.
Muscles are made of protein

Muscles work in pairs
Most muscles work in pairs, called agonist and antagonist pairs. When one muscle in a pair contracts, it relaxes its opposite. This allows for smooth, controlled movement.
For example, the biceps muscle in the front of the upper arm is responsible for flexing the elbow. When the biceps contracts, the triceps muscle in the back of the upper arm relaxes, allowing the elbow to bend.
Muscles require energy to contract
Every muscle contraction requires energy, which is provided by the breakdown of glucose. Glucose is a type of sugar that is transported to muscles through the bloodstream.
Muscles can be damaged
Muscles can be damaged through injury, overuse or disease. When a muscle is injured, it may become swollen, painful and weak. In severe cases, muscle damage can lead to paralysis.
