How to Treat Muscle Cramps
Cramps can be extremely painful and can occur in any muscle of your body. The cramping muscles contract and prevent you from using them until the pain subsides. Your cramps might come from muscle overuse, dehydration or even circulatory and nerve problems. Usually, you can treat these cramps yourself and be back to using the muscles in no time.
Instructions
Drink plenty of fluids. Water is important for general hydration, but a drink containing electrolytes, such as a sports drink, is even better for muscle cramps.
Relax the cramping muscle or muscles. Gently massage the area, while gradually and easily stretching out the muscle.
Apply an ice pack to the cramping muscle. Gently massage the muscle with the ice for about 10 minutes. The cold will help reduce pain and swelling. Follow up by massaging the muscle with your hands.
Use an analgesic balm for the same effect as an ice pack--for reducing pain and swelling. Massage the analgesic balm into the cramping muscle and try to relax the muscle. Be sure to read the directions on the container and wash your hands after applying the balm.
