How to Relieve and Prevent Constipation
The majority of Americans suffer from constipation on a regular basis. Here are some tips to help relieve and prevent constipation.
Instructions
Drink water. Not getting enough water in your diet can certainly lead to constipation. 8-10 glasses per day is necessary for regular body functions. The more you weigh, the more water you need. Drinking three glasses of cold water in one sitting has been known to stimulate bowel movement if you're already constipated.
Fiber up. Make sure you're getting enough fiber in your diet. Fiber supplements can be useful, but can also worsen your constipation if you aren't getting adequate water intake. Start eating whole grains and leafy green veggies to get a source of natural fiber.
Don't take laxatives or stool softeners on a regular basis. It's better to not take them at all. Constant use of laxatives can lead to heart problems as well as weaken your body' s natural impulse to defecate. Try taking yellow dock (an herb) or magnesium instead. These are natural, gentle remedies to relieve constipation.
Get off your butt. Exercise!! Lack of exercise can and will contribute to intestinal problems. Walking and swimming can help stimulate bowel movements and are excellent for normal bowel function.
Reduce stress. Stress can lead to constipation in some, while it leads to diarrhea in others. Learn ways to reduce daily stress, such as meditation, massage therapy, prayer, etc.
