Understanding the Long-Term Effects of Crohn's Disease
Crohn's disease is a disease of the colon called an inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD. The lining of the colon becomes inflamed and causes abdominal pain. Crohn's disease can cause symptoms and complications that should be discussed with a doctor.-
Diarrhea
-
According to the Mayo Clinic, inflamed colon cells secrete excessive amounts of water and salt that cause diarrhea and loose stools. Recurring diarrhea may require prescribed drugs from a doctor if it cannot be managed with over the counter medications.
Ulcers
-
Ulcers can develop as small sores on the surface of a patient's colon. These sores can grow larger over time and penetrate deep into the walls of the intestine.
Appetite and Weight
-
Abdominal pain and colon inflammation can cause a reduced appetite that may lead to undesired weight loss.
Malnutrition
-
Diarrhea and inflammation can reduce the colon's ability to absorb nutrients from the food that a patient has consumed. A prolonged lack of iron absorption can result in anemia.
Bowel Obstruction
-
Inflammation and irritation of the walls of the colon can cause a narrowing of the colon and may even result in an obstructed bowel. Surgery may be required to remove sections of the colon that have become completely blocked.
