How to Cut a Suppository
Whole rectal suppositories look like long pills with one flat end and one ovular, slightly pointy tip. Sometimes doctors recommend that patients -- especially infants, toddlers and small children -- take only half of a suppository at a time. A responsible adult should cut the suppository for a half dose and save the other half for the next dose. Keep the suppository in a cool location, such as a refrigerator, until you are ready to cut it and administer it to the patient.Things You'll Need
- Cutting board
- Razor blade or sharp, straight-edge knife
Instructions
Unwrap the suppository from its packaging, if it is wrapped, or take it out of the container.
Lay the suppository on the cutting board. Hold it between the thumb and index finger of one hand.
Slice the suppository lengthwise down the middle, with the knife or the razor blade.
Wrap the other half of the suppository in clean foil or put it in a container. Place it back in the cool location, until you need it.
