Understanding a Placenta Without a Fetus: What It Means
If an ultrasound shows a placenta and no baby, it may indicate a condition called a blighted ovum. A blighted ovum occurs when a fertilized egg implants in the uterus, but the embryo does not develop. The placenta, which provides nourishment to the developing fetus, may still grow, but there will be no visible embryo or fetus on the ultrasound.
A blighted ovum is usually diagnosed in the first trimester of pregnancy, and it is a common cause of early miscarriage. In most cases, a blighted ovum will resolve on its own, and the woman will experience a miscarriage naturally. However, in some cases, medical intervention may be necessary to remove the placenta.
If you have had an ultrasound that showed a placenta and no baby, it is important to talk to your doctor to discuss your options and receive appropriate care.
