When Does Sperm Production Begin? Understanding Male Fertility
Sperm production, or spermatogenesis, begins in the testicles of males during puberty. The process starts around the age of 10 to 14 years, and sperm production typically continues throughout a man's life, although it may decline with age.
During puberty, the hypothalamus and pituitary gland in the brain initiate a series of hormonal changes that stimulate the testicles to start producing sperm. Testosterone, the main male sex hormone, plays a key role in sperm production and is responsible for the development and maintenance of male reproductive characteristics.
