An egg is not produced in the menstrual cycle. During the menstrual cycle, a mature egg is released from one of the ovaries during ovulation, which typically happens once per menstrual cycle. The menstrual cycle is the process of hormonal changes and the preparation of the uterus for possible pregnancy. If pregnancy does not occur, the lining of the uterus sheds and is expelled during menstruation.
