Emergency Contraception & Preventing Pregnancy After Intercourse: Options & Information
If you do not want to become pregnant, there are multiple options available including:
- emergency contraceptive pills (often called the "morning after pill")
- intrauterine device (IUD)
- copper IUD
- hormonal IUD
- contraceptive implant
It is also necessary to use condoms whenever you have sex, even if you are using another method of contraception, as condoms can also protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Emergency contraception should be used as soon as possible; however, it can be used up to 5 days after unprotected sex.
