False Positive Pregnancy Test with Tubal Pregnancy: Understanding the Rare Occurrence
A false positive pregnancy test with a tubal pregnancy is extremely rare. A tubal pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants outside of the uterus, most commonly in the fallopian tubes. This type of pregnancy is not viable and cannot result in a successful birth. When a tubal pregnancy occurs, the body still produces human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), the hormone that is detected by pregnancy tests. However, the levels of hCG are typically lower in a tubal pregnancy compared to a healthy intrauterine pregnancy. Therefore, it is highly unusual to have a false positive pregnancy test with a tubal pregnancy.
If you have a positive pregnancy test and there is a concern about the location of the pregnancy, your doctor may order additional tests, such as an ultrasound or blood tests, to confirm the diagnosis and determine the appropriate treatment.
