Mitosis in Male & Female Reproductive Systems: Oogenesis & Spermatogenesis
In males:
- Spermatogonia: These are the stem cells of sperm production and are located in the seminiferous tubules of the testes. Spermatogonia undergo mitosis to produce primary spermatocytes, which then undergo meiosis to produce sperm.
In females:
- Oogonia: These are the stem cells of egg production and are located in the cortex of the ovaries. Oogonia undergo mitosis to produce primary oocytes, which then undergo meiosis to produce eggs.
